A recent article in Campus Safety magazine outlines a theft-related crime that was committed in February at Toronto Western Hospital.
The primary theme of the story? The items lifted from the facility were worth $1.2 million dollars.
Armed with a calculated combination of tools and transport equipment, the heist was executed in the hospital’s endoscopic clinic, during a weekend timeframe when it was closed.
Surveillance footage shows an abundance of equipment–all used to examine the inside of a patient’s stomach–stolen at 2:30 in the afternoon on a Saturday. Of course, the surveillance footage was reviewed long after the crime had been committed and the equipment was long gone… Two days to be exact.
Now burdened with the challenges of trying to develop suspect profiles, reschedule appointments, and seeking loaner equipment, Toronto Western had a significant distraction on its hands.
This is a prime example of where RTLS-based tagging and locating technology could have made a significant difference. What if hospital officials could have received an alert the MOMENT this equipment started moving? Staff can also receive an alert if equipment is an area of the hospital it should be not be, such as exit locations, indicating it is leaving the building.
The situation could have been responded to as it was happening. When real-time alerts are sent to the proper staff members, real-time reactions can occur as well. With systems such as ZulaFly’s Fuzion, gone are the days of uncovering significant loss events many hours after they occur, increasing the odds of the goods being safely recovered and returned to your hospital.
